Livermore Public Library will be offering a free media literacy lecture series on September 7 and September 14, delivered by local journalist Cierra Bailey. Bailey is East Bay Division editor for the Embarcadero Media Foundation, a nonprofit news organization that publishes the Pleasanton Weekly, LivermoreVine.com and DanvilleSanRamon.com. She has a bachelor’s degree in journalism and media studies from California State University, Monterey Bay, and a master’s degree in communications from Syracuse University. Over the last decade, Cierra has worked in print, digital media, television and radio.

Both lectures do not require pre-registration and will be offered to adults and teens two consecutive Saturdays at 2 p.m. at Civic Center Library, 1188 S. Livermore Ave., Livermore. Attendees are encouraged to attend both lectures.

Media literacy programming in this format has returned to Livermore Public Library, thanks to the generous support of the Friends of the Livermore Library. The lectures are intended to provide community members with the tools necessary to navigate increasingly complex information landscapes, like online news and news generated through social media. Lecture 1, offered on September 7, will focus on trends in media and its impact on our society. Lecture 2, offered on September 14, will focus on responsible media use, including how to identify misinformation and disinformation.

In 2023, Livermore Public Library hosted former award-winning journalist and UC Berkeley School of Journalism lecturer Robert H. Rogers. The complete recorded lectures can be found on the Media Literacy Resources page on the Library’s website: Media Literacy Resources | Livermore Public Library (livermoreca.gov)
